Arsenal are apparently interested in reigniting their chase for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata in the summer – that’s according to a report from Spanish outlet OK Diario this week, having previously made initial attempts to sign the international front-man ahead of 2016/17.

The suggestion is that Arsene Wenger, who spent a good portion of last summer chasing Alexandre Lacazette and Jamie Vardy to no avail before opting for Lucas Perez and a change of position for Alexis Sanchez, still has eyes for Morata.

The 24-year-old only rejoined Real in June when Los Blancos exercised a buy-back clause to prise him away from Juventus after two seasons in Italy.

He originally left in search of better playing opportunities and rejected firm offers from elsewhere to return, although he has remained a bit-part player at the Bernabeu this season.

A minor injury did keep him out of the team for three weeks in late November, but Karim Benzema continues to be Zinedine Zidane’s preferred central striker. It means that Morata has started just six La Liga games all season.

There is no suggestion from OK Diario that Zidane or Real want Morata to leave, indeed quite the opposite, but the point is made that the player could consider his 2018 World Cup place with Spain to be under threat if he is not playing regularly at club level next season.

Arsenal are allegedly willing to make an ‘irresistible offer’, and then the decision will be entirely up to the player if he’s prepared to walk out on Real for the sake of his career for a second time.
