BALLON D’OR – French football’s Cristiano Ronaldo’s one-day test said he would have had more Ballon d’Or than Lionel Messi if the two players have evolved together on the same team. A simple provocation? Not sure.
Who would Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi have won most of Ballon d’Or if the two players were team-mates? It is the question a bit provocative that was asked in Portuguese by France Football in the interview published Tuesday following his fourth consecration. And that will obviously never have an answer.
Real Madrid striker of course did not dismantle and delivered an expected answer: “If we were on the same team, I think I would have more than him.” Before adding, with a smile: “But it would not be far.”
A credible statement
Absolutely, the declaration of the winner of the Euro makes sense, insofar as it is by nature less altruistic than the Argentine. He is less at the service of his formation than the reverse. For example, the Catalan made 18 assists in 33 Liga matches last season, against 11 for his best enemy, who played 36 games. A trend that is true throughout their career (219 in 552 matches for Messi, 183 in 659 games for Ronaldo). As we know, statistics are very important when voting for the award.
Nevertheless, it is not absurd to imagine that by putting the two stars on the same team, their statistics would decrease fairly significantly. In the image of what happens in the NBA when several “big” shooters are aligned together. Therefore, this hypothetical drop would certainly have benefited a third thief. Manuel Neuer (2014), Franck Ribéry (2013) or Andrés Iniesta (2010) might have an even higher profile than at present.
